Backyard Ultra World Record

Australia’s Phil Gore holds the official men’s Backyard Ultra world record. Gore ran 119 laps totalling 798km (495 miles) at the Dead Cow Gully in Queensland, Australia, in June 2025.

Gore’s day job sees him fighting fires across Western Australia and, by night, he holds world records in endurance racing.

A Backyard Ultra consists of a 6.7km (4.2-mile) loop that should be completed in a 60-minute window. Every hour, a whistle signals runners off the course, beginning the start of the next loop.

Runners complete each loop at their own pace and leisure, and will continue the race for as long as they keep getting back to the start/finish line. Some have tens of minutes of rest, others tens of seconds.
